PHP2Shell: What the Critical PHP Vulnerabilities Mean for Hudson Valley and Westchester Businesses

What is PHP2Shell?

PHP is the programming language behind a large share of the world’s websites, online stores, customer portals and hosting control panels. PHP2Shell is the name given to two remote code execution (RCE) flaws in PHP itself, not in any one plugin or theme. That means a site can be exposed even if its own code and plugins are fully up to date.

• CVE-2026-109618 involves how PHP handles running out of memory in the middle of a web request. Request data can be left half-built, and PHP may later treat that broken data as valid.
• CVE-2026-109619 involves leftover “stale” data that survives after its memory is freed, which a later request on the same server process can reuse.

The PHP security team rates both flaws 9.2 out of 10 (Critical) on the CVSS v4.0 scale, and both can be exploited by an unauthenticated attacker over the internet.

Why this one is urgent

• The details leaked early. Information about the flaws appeared online on October 20, before the planned coordinated disclosure and before patches existed. Attackers had a head start.
• Working exploits exist. Security researchers have reproduced the attack, and PHP’s own advisory describes a demonstrated exploit against Apache servers using mod_php. Researchers have also shown attacks against popular platforms including WordPress, Magento, Drupal, Joomla, Nextcloud and phpMyAdmin.
• The exposure is massive. Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 reports more than 22.6 million internet-facing systems that may be vulnerable.
• The code is old. Researchers trace the vulnerable code back more than a decade, so older servers are affected too.

As of today, PHP and CISA have not confirmed widespread attacks in the wild. With public details and working exploits, we expect that to change quickly. The time to patch is before your site becomes a target.

Is my website affected?

Assume yes if your site or application runs PHP and is reachable from the internet. Every common way of running PHP for the web is affected, including PHP-FPM, Apache with mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP and LiteSpeed. Servers using Apache with mod_php face the highest risk, because an attack can succeed before any website code even runs.

What a successful attack can do

Remote code execution means an attacker can run their own commands on your server. In practice that can lead to stolen customer data and payment details, website defacement, malware or spam injected into your pages, ransomware, and a hidden “web shell” backdoor that lets attackers return later. For an online store or any business that handles personal information, that can also mean breach notifications, lost sales and damage to your reputation and Google rankings.

What to do right now: a 5-step checklist

1. Find every PHP system you own. Include your main website, landing pages, online store, client portals, staging sites, intranet tools and hosting control panels.
2. Check the PHP version on each one. Your hosting control panel usually shows it, or your web host can tell you.
3. Update PHP to a fixed version (8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35), then restart the web server and PHP workers so the fix actually loads.
4. Ask your web host to confirm. If you use shared or managed hosting, contact them today and get written confirmation that your account runs a patched PHP version.
5. Look for signs of compromise. Check for unfamiliar admin users, new or modified PHP files, unexpected redirects, and unusual outbound traffic. Patching closes the door but does not remove an attacker who is already inside.

Can’t patch today? Temporary mitigations for your IT team

PHP’s advisory lists configuration changes that reduce risk until the update is applied. They are stopgaps, not fixes, and some will break features:

• Set session.upload_progress.enabled = 0 in php.ini or the server/FPM pool configuration (not through ini_set() or .user.ini), then restart all workers. Upload progress bars will stop working.
• For CVE-2026-109618, PHP’s main interim setting is memory_limit = -1, which removes the per-request memory cap. Pair it with low post_max_size and input limits, and monitor server memory closely.
• On PHP-FPM, pm.max_requests = 1 stops one request’s leftover state from reaching the next, at a performance cost.
